Sonsbeek 2008: ‘GRANDEUR'
In 2008, the 10th Sonsbeek international
sculpture exhibition will be held, one of the major international sculpture
events in Europe. The 10th Sonsbeek exhibition is entitled ‘Grandeur'. The concept was developed by
artistic director Anna Tilroe, well-known art critic and curator. "To me, the
painful but courageous pursuit to transcend your day-to-day limitations, is
Grandeur."
Exhibition
Tilroe invited thirty internationally well-known
artists from around the globe to visualise the aspiration for human greatness.
From June 13 to September 21 2008 their sculptures and installations will be
exhibited in the magnificent Sonsbeek Park in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
Procession
On June 8, 2008, the people of Arnhem will carry the art pieces through
the streets to Sonsbeek Park in a solemn, but festive Procession.
Tilroe: "A
procession is a powerful tool to invoke a joint experience in which
people feel
connected. The Sonsbeek 2008 Procession has a distinct symbolic
meaning: to
celebrate art as symbol of human imagination and social awareness."
Legendary
reputation
The Sonsbeek sculpture exhibition has a unique
tradition. Since 1949, every 7 years, the event stands for a personal and
critical vision concerning developments in contemporary visual arts, with a
focus on sculpture. Previous artistic directors include: Saskia Bos, Valerie
Smith and Jan Hoet.
